Thank you!
Welcome everyone! My name is Kimberly Stoppel and I will be your instructor for TEEL 480/481 Corrections in Reading Disabilities. I am so eager to meet each of you and help you strengthen your evaluating and teaching skills in the area of reading. I have been an educator for 30 years. My passion is the early elementary grades where it “all begins!” But, I have experience teaching the intermediate grades in summer intervention programs. I was a full time instructor for Fort Hays the last two years. I have decided that I can make a difference in many “little” lives by working with future educators. It has been an exciting journey so far! This year, I decided to head back to the elementary classroom and am teaching all day kindergarten once again. I live in Russell, Kansas which is just 30 miles east of Hays. My husband Blaine and I raised 3 wonderful children in a 100 year old two story house that we renovated ourselves 25 years ago. We have two pets, a chocolate lab named Champ and a bull dog named Mack. I love to read, (obviously!), cook, and even do some trap shooting once in awhile! My favorite hobby is playing in a hand bell choir at my church. I will tell you a little bit about each of my family members during the first class session via adobe connect! It is my goal to make sure each of you becomes comfortable and competent in administering informal reading assessments and interpreting the results. I look forward to a fun semester!
ReplyDeleteI love old farmhouses and old stone houses. My husband and sons joke with me when we happen to see an abandoned stone house or farmhouse "There is your fixer upper Mom." My parents live in a Victorian era farm house.
DeleteHi! My name is Jennifer Willcott and I am a mother of three children and one beautiful Angel. My family just moved from Holton Kansas, to St. Louis Missouri, over the summer! Most of my interest lies with where I am currently at in life. For the past six years I have been at home raising babies but today, my children are finally all out of diapers, potty trained and two are now in school all day. With this said, it is just recently I came to the realization that I may have “time” to begin an actual hobby, besides changing diapers, wiping noses, and not getting a solid night’s sleep, haha!! I have currently started enjoying “making” time in designing hair bows for two of my girls and trying to do crafts from Pintrist. Other than that I enjoy running, participating in 5K runs, volunteering, cooking (baking especially), spending time with my family, and exploring our new community (St. Louis).
ReplyDeleteSince I graduated from Kansas State University in 2005, I have been substitute teaching – ALL grades! Even when I stayed home I substituted when I could. I have also been teaching 3rd grade Religious Education for the past 3 years. This experience has really helped me develop my teaching skills and ability to grow in confidence and the understanding on the diversity of each classroom.
I hope to gain from this course, the skills needed to help understand the reading process and related reading instructions by tutoring. I also want to better understand how strategies are used to develop proficiency in readers with reading deficiencies. Growing up I had a learning disability and one of the most problems I had was with reading and spelling…so this class really pulls at my ability to understand students prominent frustration, sadness, and fear of the inability to conquer the feat to read at a level in which their peer may be at.
Looking forward to it!!

ReplyDelete1) Tell us a little about you and your interests.
My name is Jennifer Pence and I am originally from Northern California. I moved to Kansas about 5 years ago because this is where a lot of family on my dad's side lived. Right now my interests are substitute teaching, fishing, and spending time with my fiancé who I have been with for 10 years (we first met in Jr. High School). I really love substitute teaching because of the variety of students I get to work with (If you love what you do you will never work a day in your life).
2) Tell us what experience you have had in the classroom.
In California I started off as a substitute Para educator (1 year). As a substitute I met a student that was in need of a Para educator full time so I worked with him at his new school for two years. We were like two pees in a pod at school because we did everything together. He was diagnosed with cerebral palsy so needed much assistance with every day activities but was very advance in academics. I learned how to adapt activities in and out of the classroom that work fit him. I then moved to Kansas and completed my A.S. degree and started substituting about 2 years ago. I was able to substitute for summer school last summer as the regular teacher which was great experience. I was also able to work in a different school district as a Para educator last summer as well. I have worked with a variety of students from pre-K to 12th grade and really enjoy all of it but I really have a passion for special education. I get plenty of experience because I substitute virtually every day of the school year.
3) Tell us what you hope to gain from this course.
I believe that a person never stops learning and I truly hope to gain knowledge that will help me become a better educator. I do hope and expect that I will be more prepared as an educator after this course. I can also say that I am hope to gain more experience on writing lesson plans in a way so that I feel more comfortable with them in the future.
Hi! My name is Patti Isaac and I am a wife and a mother of five. We live in Meade, Kansas just a few miles from the lake (though we rarely ever visit the lake). I enjoy reading, scrap-booking and (like Jennifer W.) browsing Pinterest. It gives me so many ideas for my home as well as for the classroom. I have said goodbye to all of the social network sites for now because school is a high priority for me. When I am taking classes, I give it 100%.
ReplyDeleteI have had experience in the classroom as a Para Educator and after I received my Associates degree I was a substitute in every grade level from kindergarten to eighth grade. My favorite was being a long-term substitute in kindergarten for the last six weeks of school. It was a great learning experience for me and solidified my desire to become a teacher. It takes a tremendous amount of energy to be a kindergarten teacher. I hope to get a job in any grade from first through fourth. I used to be set on third grade, but as I get closer, I am open to much more.
I hope to gain experience and knowledge in this course that I can take and use in my classroom.
Good luck to everyone! I look forward to taking this class with everyone!
Hello class! I'm Ryan Duey, I currently live in Topeka, KS. I am a senior at FHSU, finally my last year! I am an avid sports nut and I love the outdoors. I have worked with children since 2007 in Childcare settings and am excited for the opportunity to move up into the School setting.
ReplyDeleteThe only real experience I've had in a classroom was Reading internship last semester. I loved it and learned a lot. I was fortunate enough to have a mentor who let me teach a lot. I am now hoping to use what I learned from her and this class to do this class well.
I feel this is a vital course for Elementary Teachers. I'm hoping to gain a lot of knowledge on how to help students with reading, especially struggling students. I do not have much experience in helping students on a personal level like this so I'm hoping to gain a lot through this course.
Hello Neighbor! I live about 10 miles north of Topeka.
DeleteHi! My name is Amy Kovacs and I was born and raised in Florida but now find myself in Hot Springs, SD. I have a Bachelor's degree in an unrelated field from the University of Florida, where I met my husband. He works at Wind Cave National Park and our twin girls start kindergarten this year. I enjoy reading, running, hiking, camping, and watching movies. In my past life (before kids), I enjoyed traveling the world and competing in triathlons.
ReplyDeleteWhen I first started at FHSU in January of 2009, I began volunteering once a week in a kindergarten class and was able to observe a few other grades. Since then I've done a few more observations and two internships - Reading and Language Arts and Math. I have loved every minute!
I hope to learn how to do assess students' reading abilities and use that information to develop comprehensive instruction. I hope to gain experience teaching differentiated groups. Overall, I just want to feel prepared for the varied abilities I will see in the classroom.
My family went through Wind Cave a couple years ago on vacation. We really like visiting caves. However, they are guided. If there is a cave close to where we may be visiting, we usually visit.
DeleteMy name is Danielle Vigness. I am from Bucklin, KS, and I married my high school sweet heart and moved to Washington State after high school. My husband was in the military and is now out of the military so we just moved back to Kansas and bought our first house in Plainville! So that's the exciting part of our lives, along with the fact that I am a senior! We also have a border collie named Maggie. For fun I love to read, go hiking, watching just about any kind of movie but scary movie, and spending time with my family and friends.
ReplyDeleteExperience I have had in the classroom is through internships I have done since high school and also substituting for many different grade levels. I recently discovered that P.E. class is the worst class ever to sub for so if you haven't subbed for P.E. yet, let me save you and tell you to deny the job!
What I hope to gain from this course is how to encourage students to read, to enjoy reading, and not to be embarrassed to read. I want to learn how to be able to help all students in my classroom that are at different reading levels and how to get my students to succeed with their reading.
Danielle, I am from Sublette not too far away from Bucklin! I am sorry to hear that your experience subbing in PE wasn't pleasant.
DeleteHello! My name is Jade Wunder. I grew up in Osawatomie, KS. Currently I live with my husband, Jeremy and my two sons Maverick (3) and Gentry (6 months) in Linn Valley, KS. I am a very family oriented person and when I am not working or doing school work I enjoy spending time with my boys. We love to be outside. I love to ride four wheelers. I also love to read.
ReplyDeleteI am looking forward to graduating this coming May and plan to student teach this Spring. I currently teach Pre K at La Petite Academy. I love teaching and watching children grow and learn. Prior to working at La Petite I taught a theraputic preschool for a community mental health center. Internships I have taken thus far have also assisted me with classroom experience.
I hope to gain knowledge in the area of teaching reading and assisting children who struggle with reading. Reading is so important and is the foundation for everyday life. I really want to be good at assisting children who have disabilites. I look to become more aware of ways to make myself a better teacher and different tools I can use to assist children when they are having difficulty.
Jade -
DeleteMy sister used to work at a La Petite Academy school in Joplin, Mo. Your boys' names are so cute! I too have two boys, Nolan(7) and Jake(4). Good luck in school, and pray for May to get here soon!
Hanna
Hello everyone! My name is Charelle Schneider, and I live in Herington, KS. I have been with my husband, Steve, for 18 years. We have three wonderful children, Tanner is in 10th grade this year, Trenden is in 7th, and our daughter Payten is in 6th grade. Some of my hobbies include watching my kids play sports, camping with my family, jogging, and spending time with my husband and kids. Outside of work and going to kids activities, I am all about spending time with my family.
ReplyDeleteI have been an elementary Para educator in special education going on my 6th year. I am a senior here at FHSU and look forward to student teaching this spring semester. I love working with kids and look forward to going to work every day! I have always wanted to be an educator and decided after two years as a Para that I was going to go for it.
I hope to gain as much knowledge as I possibly can in regards to assessing students, strategies that I can use to help children in reading, how I can help all students become great readers, and applying everything I learn into my classroom curriculum.
Hello everybody! My name is Kendra Lundgren, I live in Scott City, KS. I'm excited to say this is my last semester before I student teach and I've learned dreams really do come true! I've been a paraprofessional for 7 years, 5 of which I worked in special education and the other 2 I was a sign language interpreter. I did turn in my resignation to the school in May due to student teaching this coming spring and am sad I'm not heading back to the elementary school like everyone else I know. My heart is really in the special education and I can't wait to be a teacher!! I'm also very much into showing horses and enjoy traveling and having a 'show' family as well. I'm not married or have kids but I have an amazing boyfriend who supports me very much and I'm thankful for that.
ReplyDeleteI've been in the classroom as a paraprofessional and then again in my internships and I LOVE the elementary school level. I love that the children love learning at that age and they love their teachers very much.
I hope to learn as much as possible from this course on assessing students, writing lesson plans, and working with a small group as possible. I'm excited to be tutoring a small group as well!! Best luck to everyone else in this course and all your others.
It is so exciting that you are almost done and will be student teaching soon. This year will be my last year and then I will student teach. It sounds like you have a great amount of experience and will provide your students with a wonderful learning experience. I also love the elementary level!
DeleteHi Kendra,
DeleteMy husband, son, and I just moved to Tribune! It's nice to see someone is in the area. Good luck this semester.
My name is Zoë Greenemeyer and I live in Salina, Kansas. I am married and I have two daughters. Our life is pretty busy, there never seems to be enough time in the day to get everything done. When I am not in school I enjoy reading, bike riding, hiking, and gardening. I am currently in my last year before I student teach. I am excited and fearful that the end is near. Both my parents are educators so I have always been around elementary schools and college campuses. My favorite time in the classroom is getting the classroom ready before the first day of school. I hope to learn how to guide students into better understanding material in front of them. I struggled with reading as a child and I would like to gain knowledge on how to help other students who struggle.
ReplyDeleteI am also getting pretty close to my student teaching and it makes me very excited to see the light at the end of the tunnel. However, I am also very nervous for the end to come. Good Luck this semester!
DeleteHello class, my name is Hanna Haraughty. I live in Altamont, KS with my husband, Greg and our two sons, Nolan who is 7 and Jake who will be 5 next month. This is my last semester before I student teach. So excited!!!! I enjoy coaching the boys' little league baseball team in the summers and hope to one day coach while I teach. I enjoy little ones so much. For the last four years I have owned and operated my own home daycare. After my 2nd son was born I couldn't leave him while I worked out of the home so I created a business while I stayed home with both my boys. This allowed me to go back to school and get my degree. It works out where (fingers cross) I pass my last year and my PLT then my little one will go to kindergarten next year which should be my first year teaching!! I was in the classroom last semester for Internship 1 and 2 and loved it so much. I also coached against some of my students this past summer so they thought it was neat that they seen me again somewhere other than school. I am excited about his class, I love to read and have been working really hard at helping my oldest son read and feel this class will give me so much more information for my efforts.
ReplyDeleteGood luck everyone!

ReplyDeleteHello all! My name is Ricky Rios and I live in Garnett, Kansas. To my knowledge I am a Senior at FHSU with a prior degree is psychology from Emporia State. I currently work at a mental health center in southeast Kansas working with children. The kids range in age from 4 - 18. I typically spend a good majority in classrooms during the school year where I began to contemplate to career change. I enjoyed the thought of being to work with children in a different setting daily. I live with my wife Erin who is a Human Resources Generalist at the American Eagle Distribution Center and my Basset hound Charlie. As I stated earlier I already spend a good amount of time in the classroom but not necessarily in the teaching capacity. Often times more like a para setting. THough it is beneficial as I am able to see many different teaching styles in a given week as I attend about 8 different schools with multiple teachers in each school. From this I have many ideas flowing through me. I have also created many good contacts to build from. I was able to do two/three internships last year teaching reading, science, and social studies. I too was able to have a lot of freedom teaching the students. My mentor teacher often showed me her "plan" for the period and allowed me to try on my own. She did do a great job at building me up yet allowing to "fail" somewhat or role with the punches. From this course I hope to gain a better understanding of what reading corrections can be made and what to look for. While obviously I do have background knowledge of reading limitations I think advancing that knowledge will not only make me a better rounded teacher but more prepared for new situations.
ReplyDeleteHi! My name is Rashawna Colbary. I am 29 years old, married and I have two kids. My son is 10 years old and will be starting middle school. My daughter is 3 years old and will be starting preschool. So this week is a week of firsts for me as a mom. The experience I have in education is that I have been a ESL paraprofessional for six years. However, this year I decided to be a full time student and then student teach in January. I hope to learn some new and exciting ways to engage students in reading.
ReplyDeleteHello everyone! My name is Michelle Avritt and I live in Sublette, Kansas. I have been given the awesome opportunity to be a mother to a fantabulous 7 year old!! My first BS degree is from KSU in Recreation and Parks Administration. My professional experience has been in youth development. My experience includes: an Executive Director for Boys & Girls Club, Assistant Recreation Director, Substitute Teacher, After School Program Employee, volunteer for cub scouts, church and community events. My passion is the future of our kiddos so I am finishing my degree in Elementary Education so that I will be able to live my passion and be the mom that I want to be all at the same time!!
ReplyDeleteThis course will help me to understand different issues that affect our students and how to get them through them!
Hello! I am Kim Markham. I live just north of Topeka, Kansas, near Meriden. My husband, Dane, and I have been married for almost 24 years. Dane is a firefighter with the City of Topeka and self-employed as a painting contractor. We have four sons, Tylor (20), Parker (17), Trey (14) and Pierce (11). We also have a granddaughter, Tessa (3 months. The boys are very active in sports. I have been home being a mom for over 19 years. I currently hold a bachelor's degree in home economics (FACS for the younger crowd!). I have been working as a substitute teacher for about 4 years and with all grades K-12. School started last Thursday, and I have already subbed 1 1/2 days and have a number more on the calendar! I am working on an elementary education degree with a minor in special education. This is my last semester and I will be student teaching in the spring.
ReplyDeleteReading has always been easy and enjoyable for me. However, this has not been the case with my sons. Reading is necessary for success in many aspects of school and life. Through this class I am hoping to learn ways to help students remove stumbling blocks or roadblocks to allow them to see success in reading, which can then lead to success in other areas.
Hello Everyone! I am Jessica Miescher-Lerner. I live in Lawrence, Kansas with my sons and husband. I enjoy out door activities such as hiking and skiing and indoor activities such as reading and listening to music. My husband I put on estate sales and have an antique mall booth. I also work part time overnights in a residential group home for adults with ID/DD.
ReplyDeleteI have been at FHSU part time for the last 4 years and have had a great experience thus far. I have had several volunteer positions at schools in classrooms but formally have only had observations and internships through my coursework at FHSU.
I look forward to this class because I feel that as a future educator in the field of special education I will need to immerse myself in reading instruction. I hope to learn how to help students enjoy reading as much as I do despite and difficulty they might presently have with it.
Hello Jessica. I believe that we have had a class or two together before. I also feel that I really want to learn all about reading instruction and being able to identify students who struggle with reading. I want to be able to help them so that they can continue to learn and grow, albeit, at their own pace. I look forward to working and learning with you this semester.
DeleteHello everyone. My name is LeAnn Schueneman, and I am a senior here at FHSU. I was born and raised in Topeka, but currently live in Maryland. I have been married to my husband, Rich, for 19 years. He is in the Army and our family is stationed in Maryland. We have two boys who are 13 and 11. As you can tell, I am a non-traditional college student. I was terrified of failing college as a teenager and that fear kept me from pursuing my degree. I finally won the battle of my fear and have done so incredibly well as a college student. I will graduate from FHSU in May 2013 and plan on coming back to Kansas to graduate with my class. I worked at an elementary school here in Maryland as an Inclusion Helper from 2007-2010 when I took a leave of absence to go to FHSU full-time instead of part-time. In my free time (which isn't much) I like to get together with my girlfriends, read, watch movies, and hang out with my family. What I would like to learn in this course is how to be able to recognize a child that has a problem with reading and what I can do to help that child. This has to be one of my fears about having a classroom of my own. How will I know a struggling reader? What do I do about it? How can I help them? I look forward to working and learning with you all this semester!
ReplyDeleteHello!! My name is Shanna Swan and I currently live in Olathe, Kansas ( a suburb of Kansas City). I am originally from Denver, Co, but moved to Springfield, Mo to go to MSU. After graduating with a Sociology degree I met my husband then moved to Kansas City. We have lived here now for about 11 years.
ReplyDeleteThis is my final year at Fort Hays. I am majoring in Elementary Education with a SPED minor. I have really enjoyed the virtual college experience. For the past 3 years I have been working in the Olathe school district as an Autism Instructional Assistant and love my job. I get the opportunity to work with students of all ages. I currently work in an Autism classroom in an Elementary school and in a life skills classroom with a 16 year old student with Autism. This job can be very challenging at times but it is also very rewarding and I look forward to seeing my students make progress.
Previously I worked as a Children’s Case Manager for a Community Mental Health Center. While working at that job I was able to spend a lot of time in the school setting and realized I really enjoyed it. I had thought about teaching as a profession while in college the first time around but chose a different path at that time. I finally realized that I had a passion to teach and ended up here at FHSU.
My husband and I will be celebrating our 10 year wedding anniversary in October and I am looking forward to that. To celebrate we will be going to Las Vegas and several of our friends and family will be meeting us there. We have not been fortunate to have any children (at least not yet), but we do have 2 dogs and 1 cat that keep us very busy and entertained. My husband’s father, who has Parkinson’s Disease , moved in with this past year so we all have been adjusting to that. I really enjoy taking my dogs for walks, being outdoors, photography, roller derby and trying to be crafty.
This is my last semester of school before starting student teaching and I am getting very excited to finally see the light at the end of the tunnel. I am looking forward to getting to know everyone better and wish everyone an awesome semester!!!
Shanna- Hello! It's nice to meet you. Congratulations (a bit early) on your upcoming 10 year wedding anniversary. My husband and I will celebrate 20 in February! I agree that seeing students with disabilities (like your student with Autism) grow and succeed is very rewarding...as is seeing any student progress and succeed. I have a real desire to dig deeper into Autism and where learning and studying about that disability can take me in the future. I look forward to working with you and learning with you this semester.

ReplyDeleteHello! My name is Carissa Kruse, I was born and raised in Aurora, CO along with my brother, Kyle, and my sister, Kelsey, by my parents Cindi and Lance. I got engaged over three years ago and am currently planning the wedding along with my fiancé, Lucas. We live in the small town of Clyde, KS in a beautiful home with our sweetheart of a yellow lab., Duke. I have a very large family and was quick to move to Kansas and be near all of them as soon as I graduated. I attended one semester at Kansas State University and majored in Business, by the end of that semester I realized I was spending far too much money on tuition and I wasn’t 100% sure what I wanted to major in. I transferred to Cloud County Community College the following semester and graduated with an Associate’s Degree.
I love to read and spend a lot of quality time with my Nook. My favorite authors include; Nicholas Sparks, Joanne Fluke, Jodi Picoult and Emily Giffin. I really love to read all different genres.
I also love to spend time out on the farm Lucas’ family owns. He works very hard out there to keep his family’s legacy alive and I have blast using all the equipment and helping in any way I can.
Lucas and I both love motorcycles and one of our favorite past times is cruising around on the bikes.
I have wanted to be a teacher for as long as I can remember. I love the idea of getting to spend every day with happy children (yes, I realize they will not all be happy every single day), and I have always enjoyed teaching new things to others. I hope to have as much impact on my students as many of past teachers had on me.
One of my influences is definitely my mom she was a housewife for most of my upbringing but she always made time to come into our classrooms and help with anything she could. I am also influenced by my dad. I had originally wanted to be a special education teacher because he owned a home health care agency and took care of many children with disabilities.
I have spent quite a bit of time in different classrooms while working through practicum courses as well as my internship courses. Through this course I just hope to better myself as a reading educator. I want to learn different steps to take when students are especially struggling with reading and how I can better help them to understand the material.
I am very excited to get this semester started, and look forward to getting to know all of you!
Hi all,
ReplyDeleteEveryone calls me Cat, I am 29 and have been happily married for 10 years (I know that’s young but I got lucky and found my soul mate early). We have two incredible children Ashton (9) and Ava (6) a dog, cat, crested gecko, leopard gecko, cockatiel a Bunny and about a dozen fish. We are foster parents and just had our 9mo foster son go home after spending the last 5 months with us, it is bitter sweet but I am glad he went to a good place. We live in Lawrence KS and it is the greatest city I have ever called home.
I have been working towards my elementary education degree since I got my B.S in management back in 2008. I knew from day one that it was not what was going to make me happy and that I wanted to work with kids. I am now in my final semester before student teaching in January, and can’t wait to finally reach my goal.
Our son is severely dyslexic and also has dyspraxia this has given me a crash course in language and reading difficulties. I hope to help other kids learn how to best deal with their learning issues while still staying proud of themselves. I have been tutoring my son at home for the last year with a multi sensory method and am finally starting to see some progress.
With the craziness of school, Kids, animals and work I don’t really have much time for hobbies but when I do have time I love “words with friends” or “scrabble”. I can’t wait to dive in and see how I can apply the information gained in this class in my soon to be classroom and my own children. Cat
Cat- It's good to have you in a class again! I hope that as the class and blogs go on, you can help us learn about dyslexia and dyspraxia since you have first hand knowledge in them. As future teachers we are learning that we need to be prepared and knowledgeable to reach and teach all children. Have a great semester!
DeleteHi! My name is Tammi White and I live in Great Bend, KS. I am 29 years old and I work for the USD 428 school District as a Substitute. I have worked there for the past two years as a Special Education Para Professional. I have a Bachelors Degree in Sociology from MidAmerica Nazarene University and I am on my last semester of coursework for my Bachelors Degree in Elementary Education. I will Student Teach this Spring. I have worked in some sort of classroom for the past three years. I have worked in the General classroom and also Special Ed. I love being in the classroom and learn so much each time I am there. I have two nieces and one nephew and one on the way! I absolutely love spending time with them, they are the loves of my life! I love to be outdoors and am sad that summer is over! I hope to learn how to help students who are struggling with reading and to make a difference in their lives. Reading is one of my favorite things to do, so I hope to learn a lot of new techniques in helping my students.
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to a great semester!
Tammi White
Hi! My name is Abbie and I currently live in Billings, Montana. I grew up in Derby, Kansas and graduated from Kansas State in 2007 with a degree in animal science. I moved to Montana with my husband five years ago for his career. We love living here (although it is no Kansas!)and enjoy going to Yellowstone and Glacier National Parks and doing all the outdoor things that Montana has to offer. Last summer we welcomed our first child, Amelia. She has been the greatest blessing and she has certainly cemented my desire to teach! We also have two dogs that keep us very busy. In my free time I love to bake and try new recipes, garden, stay active by running, and decorate our house. I even enjoy cleaning and organizing!
ReplyDeleteAll of my classroom experience comes from my time here at FHSU and I have really enjoyed getting to know the teachers, students, and finding out what teaching is all about. My favorite experience has been leading a small reading group. I was fortunate enough to have a mentor teacher that allowed me to have my own group, and the hands on experience is how I learn best. I am really looking forward to getting lots of practice in writing lesson plans and assessments through this class. I also want to better understand how to spot students that are having difficulties and to pinpoint exactly what can be done to help them improve. I love school and I love learning and I don't want any student to ever feel discouraged and "hate" school, so I want to know how to help students succeed.
Abbie,
DeleteIt sounds like your classroom experience has already given you a lot of great experience in helping students with reading difficulties. I am looking forward to learning more tips and techniques this semester!
Carissa
Hello everyone! My name is Jarett Schulte. I am from Russell, Kansas. I am a Senior at Fort Hays this year. I will be doing my student teaching in the Spring and plan to graduate in May. I am really excited! I really love sports, animals, and the outdoors. Speaking of animals, I got a new puppy a few weeks back. Cabela is a yellow lab. I have only had her a few weeks, but we really bond and have a great time together.
ReplyDeleteI do not have a lot of experience teaching children outside what the internships and FHSU have provided me. I have learned a lot from those classes. In one internship, I was fortunate enough to go in early and help a few students read. The students I worked one on one with where below their grade level at reading. I sometimes struggled finding ways to help them. That is what I want from this class. I want to have a variety of techniques that I can use to help any and all students in my classroom. I wish all of you a great semester!
Hello everyone, it is so good to see so many of the same names that were in my previous classes. I am going to jump right in... I have three boys and a wonderful husband! We are originally from Texas, but Archie, Mo is our home now. I am extremely pumped this semester because I am starting a new job this year. I have been a Para for 10 years almost (except for last year I was a assistant preschool teacher), but this year I am the new Title One Reading Para. I have my own room, phone, computer, and I get to make my own lesson plans! (For those of you have been a Para in the past you will understand where I am coming from.)I believe this class is going to be very beneficial and couldn't come at a better time. So needless to say that right now in my life, besides by family and church, my job is my main interest! Good luck to everyone and I am looking forward to getting to know you all as we take this journey together.
ReplyDeleteI have been a para also and I imagine you are very excited to be the new Title One Reading Para! Congratulations on this job! I am excited to hear how you are applying the things we learn first hand during this semester. Good luck!
DeleteHello! My name is Hannah Broeckelman. My husband Nathan, our son Kashton, and our two dogs moved from Manhattan, KS, to Tribune, KS at the beginning of the summer. Nathan took the position of a 6th-9th grade math teacher as well as coaching football and wrestling. This is my last semester of classes and I am looking forward to student teaching in the spring! The only stresser is finding childcare. Kashton is ten months old and very energetic. This keeps me on my toes all day! Along with a ten month old, I am adjusting to a different environment even though we are still in Kansas. Tribune is much drier, windier, and less trees than Manhattan and it is in the Mountain time zone.
ReplyDeleteGrowing up, I babysat, helped with cheerleading and sports camps, was a lifeguard and taught swim lessons, and had two younger sisters. In Manhattan, I worked as a para-educator. This greatly helped me realize that my passion is education. My father as well as many other members of my family are all educators and this helps to drive that passion. I look forward to learning more ways to help students improve their reading skills so they can want to read more. Reading is one of my favorite hobbies and I feel it greatly increases a child's chances of succeeding in school and life. I hope to learn tools to help achieve this.
Hi Hannah! I love Manhattan and visit there often. I graduated from KSU and then worked in Junction City for 5 years. I now live in Sublette, KS, not to far from you!! Have a great semester!!
DeleteHannah,
DeleteI was in the same position last year when I started as a para. It was almost instantly that I felt that I had found my dream career. Also, being a para is such great experience for becoming a teacher. I have learned so much over the past year!
Carissa
Hi! My name is Carissa Williams and I am from Baileyville, Kansas. My husband, Kelly and I, just moved back to our hometown area from the Wamego/Manhattan area and that is when I decided to chase my dream of becoming a teacher. I got my first degree in Advertising/Journalism and never felt fulfilled in my career. I began taking classes last fall and have taken 28 hours over the last year. We have a 4 year old Westie dog named Quincy, a two-child old daughter named Wrigly and are expecting a little boy at the beginning of January. We just bought a house and will be moving in November, so it will be a busy semester!
ReplyDeleteMy classroom experience includes being a para for a year and doing my internships and methods courses at the school that I work at. I am a para again this year while I continue my education.
I hope to become a more patient reading instructor from this course and hope to learn some new tricks on helping students who struggle with reading. Looking forward to a great semester!
